Maharashtra Police is one of India's largest police forces, with over 2 lakh personnel serving across 36 districts plus the separate Mumbai Police commissionerate. Recruitment into the Maharashtra Police is a major annual event attracting lakhs of applicants from across the state.

The State Level Police Recruitment Board (SLPRB) Maharashtra oversees all recruitment outside Mumbai. Constable (Unarmed Branch) recruitment is the most common drive, filling thousands of vacancies in district police forces. The selection process involves a written examination (100 marks — general knowledge, Marathi, numerical ability), Physical Measurement Test (PMT), and Physical Efficiency Test (PET). Candidates who pass all stages are subject to a medical examination and document verification.

The Sub-Inspector (SI) exam is a higher-level recruitment conducted by MPSC and separately by SLPRB. SIs are posted as station-level supervisory officers. The exam includes a Preliminary written test, Mains, and physical test. SI posts carry a starting salary of around Rs. 38,600–1,22,800 per month under the state pay scale.

Mumbai Police conducts independent recruitment for Constables through the Mumbai Police Recruitment Board. Given Mumbai's size and the higher cost of living allowances, these posts are extremely competitive. The process is similar — written test, PMT, PET, and medical.

Maharashtra Armed Police (MAP) recruits Armed Constables who are deployed for VIP security, border deployment, and anti-Naxal operations in Gadchiroli, Gondia, and Chandrapur districts. Physical standards for armed constables are slightly stricter.

The Maharashtra Prison Department recruits Prison Warders and Naiks through separate drives. These posts require passing a written exam and physical test, and candidates are posted at Central Jails and District Prisons across Maharashtra.

Physical preparation is critical — candidates should begin running training at least 6 months before the PET. The 1600m run (men) and 800m run (women) are the most common elimination filters. Regular physical training alongside written exam preparation significantly improves selection chances.
